Bakery eCommerce Website Design Project
Client: The Right Slice
Project Summary
The Right Slice is a pie bakery located in Kalaheo, Hawaii. In addition to stopping in for a treat, customers can also get their delicious pies via pickup at local farmers markets.
Bakery owner, Sandy Poehnelt, wanted to streamline the pickup process by allowing customers to place their orders online and schedule a pickup day and time. She also wanted to sell local items and ship them to her out-of-town customers.
This project included updating her branding (color palette and fonts), designing a new website, and creating an eCommerce website that allows for online orders and scheduled pickups.

Website Design
As part of the website redesign, I updated the branding (color palette and fonts) to a more professional and modern look. Since it had been quite a few years since the last website design was created, I also focused on updating the page width, page layouts, and mobile responsiveness of the website.
The Right Slice was outgrowing its previous eCommerce setup. Specifically, they wanted an easier customer experience with choosing different options and variations for the products they ordered, including having more detailed pricing for the different variations. I added some custom-coding to her website so prices were listed as the price “and up” — indicating the price would be higher for different options selected. I also set up the product pages so that the displayed price automatically updates as different options are selected.
I also modified the checkout process by adding in custom fields during the checkout, adding a credit card processing fee (as a percentage of the order total), and allowing the customer to select their pickup location along with that location’s available pickup dates and times. And I added the ability for customers to purchase online gift cards and also use those gift cards as payment on their online orders.
Notes from Kelly:
This was a challenging – yet very rewarding – project. I worked closely with the owner of the Right Slice to make sure that the website helped her business – by reducing the amount of customer service requests she received and also by streamlining their online ordering process.
I also loved seeing the transformation of the website design to a more modern look-and-feel.
This is the third (yes, 3rd!) website design I’ve created for The Right Slice in the past 14 years. Sandy has been a great client and I’ve enjoyed working with her on her website for over a decade!
What my Client Says:
“Our online shopping cart is so helpful for all of our return customers. They can order to pick up at our retail location, community events or to be shipped to them directly…with just a few clicks! We have certainly seen an increase in online orders since we updated our cart. The biggest thing I have noticed, is that there are not as many customer errors when ordering. That saves me the time of having to call or email them to get the order corrected before baking. It also saves me from looking unprofessional by having to make that extra communication.
Kelly is always available, super easy to work with and does everything to fit to my small business’s budget. I couldn’t keep up my on line presence with out her!
I often get comments on how nice our site is and how it ties in nicely with our logo and other images.”
